About

Caspian “Nimbosum” Scarborough is an independent, multimedia filmmaker and illustrator based in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Their work focuses on fantasy, comedy, animals, and self expression. They received the Scholastics Art and Writing Award in 2022, the MCAD Trustee Scholarship in 2022-2024, the Ella Pillsbury Crosby Scholarship in 2023-2024, and has been on the MCAD Dean’s List in 2022-2024. Their work has been featured in the 2025 Experiments in Satanism Exhibition, 2025 Purgatory Fest, and 2024 Foundation Studies: Homewood Exhibition. They are working towards their Bachelor’s of Art for Filmmaking with a Creative Writing Minor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Artist Statement

My art is a journey to find the joy of life, through the nature of earth, animal creatures, and our own expressions. I grew up in the Midwest, specifically Wisconsin, surrounded by bluffs and rivers. Magic was in the content I consumed, which has formed who I am and what I create. I can never make something that is 100% grounded in reality, there will always be some fantastical element in the content, whether through the design of characters, story, or background. My framing is head on, yet organic. I move the camera to where it feels natural. I aim to engage with the sound design more than I do currently.
My style is non-experimental experimental. The concrete formula that many Hollywood films use is too strict, while the experimental films are too loose and impressionistic to what I create. I walk on the line that separates them. My style and ideas are ever changing, but for now my style is mine and made of everything I am.

Secondhand Hounds

The Bond Between, formerly Secondhand Hounds, is a nonprofit animal rescue in Minnesota. They provide safe shelter, veterinary care, daily necessities, and find animals a permanent and loving home. Bond Between rescues dogs from kill shelters and from owners who can no longer provide care for their dogs around the Midwest.

Chevre Leather
Graphic Design 1, Fall 2023

Chevre Leather is a fake leather company that primarily focuses on various shoe types and wallets. The products are made with real leather and are made to order, as the company cares for the environment that is impacted by the leather and pleather (plastic leather) industry.This multi-month long project started out with ideation and research stage, where we came up with a fake company and fake story for the company. After that, we focused on sketching as many ideas as we could, playing around with various fonts and layouts. From there, we refined the logos, limiting the font choices and simplifying the design for online based viewing. Afterwards, we outputed the final design and created mockups that fitted with the idea and story of the company.

Henka Sekai is a series building up on Santi as Tanjiro with the character Mikuo, the genderbent version of Hatsune Miku. This series focused more on building light and background as an additional subject matter to the subject.

City Parks, Spring 2024

City Parks is an exploration of the city parks found in Minneapolis, MN. As I adventured, I found that a lot of the parks had anti-homeless architecture and had signs reminding us that we were on Native land, while there was nothing there to educate us or support the Natives whose land was taken for the city. I also found that the parks were less natural compared to the forest parks that I had back home.

My Family Died and Now I have to Fight Demon Michael Jackson?!, April 2024

Santi as Tanjiro aka My Family Died and Now I Have to Fight Demon Michael Jackson?! explores expression and portraiture through cosplay. From what I discovered, cosplayers tend to pick characters that they are interested in or that they relate to. Sometimes, they choose the character because they look like the character, or because they relate to the character’s story or actions. Other times, the person chooses the character out of spite or because they want a challenge in making the cosplay. They may only pick the character because
the character is popular. There is something to be learned from that individual and their outwards expression, using an existing character. For Santiago, the model, he likes the character and that is why he chose to cosplay him.My process involved a studio set up that focused on the model and the prop that he brought. We eventually moved outside due to time constraints. While outside, we walked around campus and took pictures. While in the studio, I used artificial lighting and a color changing ring light. Outside, I just used the natural light.
The choice for a studio set up was due to wanting to work with various color lights and play with traditional portraiture. I used a 24-105mm zoom lens, and a medium and larger depth of field to get more details of the outfit, makeup, and model. All of the pictures were taken without a tripod, so I embraced the blurriness of some photos. For the outside shots, it was windy, which I also embraced with subtle movement of hair, clothes, and the background.

Almost all my music is made in beepbox and then either saved as is or messed around in adobe audition.

Nimbo Dnd (The Goof Gang) (Still No Official Title Yet) is a campaign with Eleni, Fyra, Alex, and Julia.The campaign focuses around a group of college adventurers who are commissioned by various gods to retrieve a "weapon" that can take over the planet and possibly other gods.Started in Spring 2023, this campaign has been going on for around 3 years. The world and characters are expansive and have grown a lot over the years.
